  • The smart grid is an important key to promoting industrial transformation and new economic development. Taipower has built a website with information relevant to the smart grid for other countries to learn more from. This year, Taipower ranked 2nd among 86 business units in the world in the Smart Grid Index (SGI) announced by Singapore Power Ltd. (SP Group).

In response to the rapid development of energy transformation in recent years, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) has spared no effort in promoting the smart grid. Taipower stated that Singapore Power Ltd. has announced its Smart Grid Index (SGI) since 2018, evaluating the development of smart grids in different countries each year. In 2021, Taipower rose to 2nd place among 86 business units in the world , up from last year's 10th place, which was recognized and given kudos worldwide. Taipower will continue to progressively extend smart meters, enlarge its energy storage system, and strengthen the application of digital technology to grid management to strive in its development of smart grids in Taiwan.

Taipower indicated that SGI of Singapore has become a guideline for the development of international smart grids in recent years. It evaluates the promotion of smart grids of each power company in the seven subjects of customer empowerment and satisfaction, safety, green energy, monitoring and control, and the integration of distributed energy. Its research area of covers the Asia-Pacific, Europe and America. According to its 2021 Benchmarking Result announced in November last year, in a survey of 86 power businesses in 37 countries around the world, Enedis Corporation, a subsidiary of Électricité de France S.A. (EDF), ranked first with 96.4 points, and Taipower ranked second alongisde the two power companies of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison or ConEd) in the United States and UK Power Networks (UKPN) of the United Kingdom, all with 94.6 points. Other renowned enterprises include Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Ltd. (TEPCO) in Japan, obtaining 82.1 points, and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in Korea with 73.2 points. The performance of Taipower's smart grids has won international recognition.

Taipower pointed out that it has actively developed renewable energy, and promoted smart grids and an energy storage system to fortify the resilience of its electrical grids. Additionally, the Company has created a friendly grid-connection environment to enlarge the grid-connection capacity of renewable energy. Up until the end of 2020, the accumulated installed capacity for the grid-connection of solar power and wind power generators reached 5.565GW and 854MW respectively across Taiwan. Meanwhile, they also generated approximately 6,000GWh and 2,500GWh of electricity respectively last year, providing powerful support for the power supply.

To ensure the operational safety of the electricity generation, the transmission and distribution system, and the stability and reliability of the entire power system, Taipower has constructed three levels of complete power and grid monitoring capacities at its Central Dispatch and Control Center (CDCC), Area Dispatch Control Center (ADCC), and Distribution Dispatch Control Center (DDCC), instantaneously achieving a balance of power supply and demand. Meanwhile, Taipower continues to develop its Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), Feeder Automation System (FA), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and other techniques. Additionally, the lithium battery energy storage system that instantly supplies power within 0.2 seconds, and the sodium-sulfur battery energy storage system, which saves a great amount of renewable energy for use when necessary, have been built in Kinmen. This has become an authentication location for the integration of the Company's smart grid technique.

  • Taipower actively develops renewable energy, promotes the smart grid and the energy storage system to fortify the resilience of its electrical grids. Additionally, Taipower monitors the smart grid from the three levels of its central, local and regional control centers to instantaneously achieve a balance of power supply and demand. Meanwhile, the Company has built a website and exclusive Apps for high voltage and low voltage users to assist them in carrying out self-management for their power usage to achieve energy saving goals.

Moreover, to take energy transformation and stable power usage in Taiwan into consideration, Taipower has promoted ancillary services, attracting over 84MW of resources invested in by the private sector. Furthermore, Taipower has joined up with private enterprises to build its Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) system, the "first in Asia," which provides 15MW of electricity in one second. In addition to this, Taipower refers to the frameworks of the power markets in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and other advanced countries to build a power trading platform to invite private power resources to provide ancillary services through a bidding model, assisting the stability of Taiwan's power system and creating a sharing economy for power.

Taipower also pointed out that information security protection for systems is a critical link of the smart grid. To prevent attacks from hackers, Taipower has built endpoint protection along with various defense-in-depth mechanisms for information security to rapidly detect abnormalities on the Internet and at endpoints. Meanwhile, the Company has introduced an intrusion detection and defense mechanism to integrate and deliver detected intelligence to its Security Operation Center (SOC) to shorten the incident response times.

Taipower explained that to enable users to precisely command their own power usage information, Taipower has actively promoted the renewal of AMI and set up a website to serve high voltage users, and provide them with information, management of power usage, and other services. Additionally, Taipower has introduced energy saving service teams and services for energy techniques to provide users with energy saving suggestions. Meanwhile, in response to the extension of low voltage AMI, Taipower is promoting its "Taiwan Power" app and e-bill service to facilitate people's inquiries into power usage info and electricity prices by carrying out self-management for their power consumption, helping reduce peak load. Moreover, Taipower has developed its "Instant Power Points" app to attract users and achieve its energy saving goal through creative energy saving activities.

Taipower stated that the smart grid is an important key to promoting industrial transformation and new economic development. The Company has set up a website (https://smartgrid.taipower.com.tw/) with relevant information. In the future, Taipower will continue to research, develop, and innovate the layout of the smart grid, fortify the stability of its electrical grids, and enhance management efficiency to meet the expectations of SGI and gain other international recognition.
