Geothermal Power Generation

05/21/20

Execution Status

Ongoing geothermal power exploration and development includes "Green Island Geothermal Power experimental Project " and "Yilan Renze-Tuchang Thermal Power Project", which are summarized as follows:

Green Island Geothermal Power Experimental Project

This project belongs to the research project of geothermal resource exploration. The purpose is to find out the geothermal potential of Green Island. Two test wells will be complete in the first half of 2020 and carry out production capacity test and power generation potential assessment. If the test well production capacity has power generation benefit, one of the planned test wells will be converted into a production well, and the other will be a reinjection well, and a Binary system will be used for power generation tests.

Yilan Renze-Tuchang Thermal Power Project

In order to accelerate the promotion of geothermal power generation, the Ministry of Economy set up a national team for geothermal power generation in January 2018. It integrates production, government, academia, and other units to promote geothermal power generation. The first goal is to develop 8MW of geothermal power generation in Yilan Renze and Tuchang thermal zone. At present, CNPC has completed No. 3 and No. 4 wells in Renze. Taipower plans to build a geothermal power plant based on the production capacity of these two wells. The installed capacity of the power plant is initially planned to be 0.5 ~ 1MW. The construction is expected to start in 2021 and complete in 2022 as well as the commercial operation.

At the same time, Taipower will keep a close eye on the development and results of geothermal experiments conducted by the government in areas such as the Tatun volcano area, Qingshui, Jinlun, and wait for the opportunity to invest in development.
