With reference to the approaches adopted by developed countries and based on domestic and foreign situations, this company formulated its “Taipower GHG Control Strategy”. In 2010, through CO 2 emission reduction in power generation and the measures of power saving and environmental protection, the achievements in carbon reduction were:

■ CO 2 Emission Reduction in Power Generation

● As of the end of 2010, in Taipower’s Voluntary GHG Reduction Project, the power plants that promoted wind power and solar power generation, upgraded thermal unit efficiency, and increased LNG fuel use all passed the ISO 14064-2 validation. CO 2 emission reduction reached 6.09 million tons.

● In 2010, the 3 nuclear power plants in operation provided over 40 billion KWh of electricity to the power system. The amount of CO 2 reduction reached 34 million tons if calculated based on the CO 2 emissions from a supercritical coal-fired unit at 0.839 kg/kWh.

■ Promotion of Forestation

To alleviate the impact of global warming on the Earth, Taipower cooperated with the local governments of Taoyuan, Kaohsiung and Miaoli Counties to carry out forestation projects. The county governments assisted by providing land and Taipower covered expenses to jointly fulfill this task. Tree planting not only reduces CO 2 in the atmosphere but also beautifies and greenifies the environment and upgrades environmental quality. In 2010, Taipower completed 3 forestation projects:

● A 30 hectares forestation project in the Army Infantry School in Kaohsiung was completed. There were in total 45,000 trees planted.

● Under Taoyuan County Government’s “Public Tree Planting Project”, the tree planting area reached 6.72 hectares.

● Taipower cooperated with Miaoli County Government for a forestation project in an area of 23 hectares.

■ Achievements in Carbon Reduction through Power Saving

In 2010, the amount of power saved reached 5.57 billion KWh, equal to saving 1.38 million KLOE. The amount of renewable energy power generation reached 0.52 billion KWh, equal to a forestation area of 0.37 million hectares.

■ Environmental Protection

After many years of effort, the intensity of air pollution emitted from Taipower’s thermal power plants was greatly reduced as compared with the levels of 1989 ( per million KWh ) : PM from 745kg to 33kg, SOx from 6,323kg to 342kg, NOx from 1,503kg to 354kg.
